Stone crabbing is one of Florida’s most sustainable angling businesses. Unfortunately, much of Florida saw smaller take than they had hoped this past season. For anglers in the Keys though, the season was still great. Anglers in both Miami and the Keys did well. Stone crabbing businesses in our area are still going strong, even while more delicate areas are still trying to cover from their red tide woes, infrastructure issues and a category 5 storm. Only about 500 of the nearly 1,400 stone crab permits were issued to anglers in the Keys, yet our fishermen were able to take in about 65 percent of the season’s harvest.
Stone crabbing is so sustainable because only the claw is taken and it regenerates once it’s removed. The eight-month long season began in October. In the Florida Keys, commercial fishermen reported that the supply was good and the demand was strong this season. Commercial fishing is an important part of the Florida Keys economy. Spiny lobster is typically considered the most valuable fishery in the Keys. However, lobster traps were in the water already when the storm went through.
Stone crab fishing is done by many lobster fisherman in the Keys, and that diversification significantly helped out these anglers. More than just the anglers were happy, of course. The crabbing industry affects the economy, but the fishermen down here are smart and have multiple options for staying afloat.
