We recently posted a blog post about how to spot flamingos in the Florida Keys. Did you know that flamingos aren’t the only bubble-gum colored bird that your customers can spot in the Keys? If you planning to open a business in the Florida Keys or if you are planning to buy an existing business in the Florida Keys and will interact with tourists, this is information that you’ll want to know. See, as a merchant, a mariner owner, a charter boat captain or the owner of a microbrewery in the Florida Keys, your customers will ask you questions like this. If you can give them knowledgeable answers, you can make their entire visit to the Keys more exciting.
Roseate Spoonbills are native to Southern Florida and are just as cool to see as flamingos. Spoonbills are named for the spatulate shaped bill that strains shallow water like a straining spoon. So, when your customers ask about flamingos, be sure to inform them of the Roseate Spoonbills too. Tell them if they’re out on a tour and they spot dense red and black mangrove areas to look a little closer for the Spoonbills. Another way to spot them is by looking for other fish-foraging birds. The Roseate Spoonbill often forages, roosts, and nests with ibises, herons, and egrets!
We once believed that the Keys had lost all Roseate Spoonbills, but wild Roseate Spoonbill were re-discovered in the Florida Keys in 2006. Roseate Spoonbills are the only spoonbill species found in the Americas. Since their beaks are hidden in the water while fishing, it’s completely possible that many tourists thought they saw a flamingo when they really spotted a Roseate Spoonbill!
