It can be a challenge to save water when you have multiple family members, or are watering a garden, but there are very practical ways to conserve water that you probably haven’t thought of and won’t notice or feel deprived if you employ.
Ways To Cut Water Costs By Half
- Don’t let the water run when shaving or brushing your teeth
- Install a low-flow shower head
- Fun full loads of dishes and laundry
- Don’t hand-wash dishes
- Cut four minutes off of your shower
Turn off the water while shaving and brushing your teeth. Depending on the amount of people in your household, this could reduce your water bill by about $300 a year.
When you Install a Low-flow show head, you generally don’t notice the lowered amount of water, because it disperses it in a more concentrated area, so the pressure doesn’t feel less. It gets you just as clean, but doesn’t waste as much water. This has the potential for major savings for a family of four.
It is always a bad idea, environmentally, to run a washing machine, even on “small load”, for one item, because it uses more water than needed (same for a dishwasher). Wait until you have a full load of clothes of dishes to run the washing machine or dishwasher – it will save money and time and sanity.

Most people like to relax in the shower and let the water hit their tired muscles, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re serious about saving on your water bill, you can cut your showers by four minutes – it will result it cutting your water bill in about half. In many areas, that means your sewer bill will also be cut in half. You can splurge every now and again, but for the most part, make showers about business only, and you’ll see the rewards on your bill.
